Taking responsibility means you own success – and failure. You need to have all bases covered; your reputation depends on it…
In this series, we give you simple and compelling industry insights into all of Engineers Australia's Stage 2 Chartered Competencies that will help you prepare your Evidence Statements for assessment for that highly-prized Chartered status.
They have been prepared and condensed by Fellow Chartered Professional Engineers and Engineering Executives based entirely on their personal experience and engineering practice at the highest level of the profession in complex industrial settings.
3. Responsibilities for engineering activities
Taking responsibility seems obvious. You put your hand out for the rewards when you get it right and you're the first one to put your hand up when you get it wrong. Fess up, own up. Problem is, not enough people - and engineers - operate according to this very simple formula. However, if you keep in mind that your reputation and career prospects are riding on it, that definitely changes the equation.
So, 1) never take the credit for someone else's work, 2) promote the achievements of others far and wide, 3) expand your networks and industry reach so your peer reviews are rich and robust and, frankly, better than anybody else's.
Personal responsibility = personal integrity = career success.
